Our Community

Ashburton Avenue Neighborhood is a diverse urban community in the heart of Yonkers, New York. Our neighborhood has a lot to offer and is slated for city-sponsored redevelopment, which has great potential to bring more visibility to the area, improve our buildings, stores, services and create jobs.

Our People:
Yonkers New York has a population of over 195,000 people. Ashburton Avenue Neighborhood is home to a very diverse population of just over of 10,000 Yonkers residents:

  •
  • 43.5% of the population is Black
  • 38.2% of the population is Hispanic or Latino
  • 29.6% of the population is Foreign born, of which 69.5% are Non-Naturalized
  • 28.2% of the population is White

Our Strengths:
One of our biggest greatest strengths is our diverse population. We have valuable opportunities for dialogue and community building with the presence of so many different cultures living all in close proximity to one another. In addition to the people within our community, the location of Ashburton Avenue Neighborhood provides its residents with easy access to downtown Yonkers, city government, public institutions and a variety of other resources. With the redevelopment of our neighborhood, we anticipate an expansion of resources and opportunities.

Our Challenges:
The largest biggest challenge is the high unemployment and poverty we face. Many of our residents do not speak English and 40% of those over 25 have not graduated high school.

With the prospect of the city-slated redevelopment many of our neighborhood residents are worried that this progress will actually displace them to make room for a more affluent population to move in.

Our Communities for All Ages:
Communities For All Ages is a collaboration between various organizations, institutions/ (schools) and residents in our broader community who have put together an initiative to overcome some of the challenges facing the Ashburton Avenue Neighborhood.
